Beaujolais comes in many different styles and quality levels; Brouilly is at the pinnacle, called cru Beaujolais. Only it and nine other sub-regions stand out this way; most are named after the local village, while Brouilly is named for Mont Brouilly, a local, dormant volcano. Brouilly is the largest and southernmost cru of the ten, and the Chateau de Pierreux demonstrates classic Brouilly style: a mix of red and dark fruits like plum and cherry, along with light violet and anise aromas.
